Mohoff. George W. The Russian Colony of Guadalupe: Pryguny Molokans in Mexico, 1995.

— Updated 8 December 2021 — Short link to this page goo.gl/u3koGz
This red text is added information. All locations here are in Baja California. These names of Spiritual Christians (dukhovnye khristiane) from Russia were mostly of the Prygun faith. A few may have been Orthodox or non-Orthodox (sectarians) who intermingled with their fellow countrymen, some intermarrying. Name spellings are as published, not cross-checked with other records. Married women's maiden names are not listed, unfortunately. Names may be repeated on the same list. Spellings often vary. Transliteration from Russian is not uniform. A few names were missed and noted. Lists are sorted here alphabetically for ease of use.

All names on these lists are combined into a large spreadsheet database: goo.gl/zbY9gu

Because Mohoff lived in the Guadalupe Valley, his knowledge of the more distant settlement areas was limited. Due to his grammar school education and primary Spanish language, this project was very difficult for him. Rather than allowing for more research time and enlisting additional proofreaders who lived in Mexico, he chose to publish "as is" just to "finally finish it" in 1993. He also forgot to publish the date in the book. The map published as an insert was my proofreading draft, not the final version meant for publication.  A lot of data and information is missing (like 2 cemeteries), leaving many questions today for much further research.

Mohoff paid for publishing, which he said cost about $10,000. Then the U.M.C.A. cheated him. Mohoff reported that Micky William Kalpakoff, came in a truck, demanded all his books (a coerced "donation" from a vulnerable elder), and took them away. Dukh-i-zhizniki sold Mohoff's books to benefit their organization, without paying for their publication costs or reimbursing Mohoff for his other costs.

Resident families of Punta Banda

Mohoff, pages 221-222

Error: These families were south of Ensenada, but north of Punta Banda, in La Mesa de San Carlos, Naranjo and/or Manadero, as Mohoff explained on page 18. Here he appeared to confuse or cluster all the areas south of Ensenada, as one Punta Banda district.

In the 1950s, Ridivon S. Pabloff, Ensenada (buried in Guadalupe Valley), bought about a square mile of land on the Punda Banda peninsula and cove, most of which was later taken by the government. Today the Pabloff clan owns and manages the La Jolla Beach Camp, and east across the highway, the La Jolla Camp residential park with a motel and community hall, and a volunteer fire station which they donated.

APPENDIX F  (Added)
Tiukma congregation moved to Jerome Junction, Arizona, January 1916.

In January 1916, the Tiukma congregation traveled from the Ensenada area to the U.S. border by "horse and wagon" with all their possessions and animals. Probably an entire train was reserved for them, to carry their property and building supplies purchased in San Diego for 20 houses. They boarded a train at the National City Depot, destination "Jerome Junction, Arizona" in what is now Chino Valley, 25 miles north of Prescott, at that time the capital of the new state of Arizona.

They signed a contract with Hassayampa Alfalfa Farms Company (HAFC) for 3,000 acres (4.5 mi2, map), with a contingency to buy 10,000 acres (15.6 mi
2) expecting all from Mexico to follow. Due to flood damage that year, they did not get irrigation water, and by August most moved 85 miles south to live near other Spiritual Christians from Russian previously settled west of Glendale, and in 1917 sued HAFC. In the 1920s nearly all the colonists from Russia near Glendale, Arizona moved to California, and a few, including Kurbatoff, and V. G. Pivovaroff who led the resettlement to Arizona, returned to Mexico.

The list of names below was unknown to Mohoff. On page 62, only one paragraph briefly mentions this resettlement group, with errors:

"Although there were more than 100 families living in Guadalupe, people continued to immigrate. In 1915, about 120 families inhabited the Valley. About this time 20 families journeyed to Jerome [Junction], Arizona, by horse and wagon to experiment with communal living. They temporarily established themselves in a large barn, and acquired jobs connected to [their own farm or other] ranch or factory work. The colony ultimately failed [due to non-delivery of irrigation water, most then moved to their own colony adjacent to 3 other colonies west of Glendale, Arizona, where most failed again at farming. In the 1920s most of] and the families returned either to Mexico or [moved to] Los Angeles."

In his 2003 book The True Molokan, on page 247, Mohoff modified this short section:

"By 1915, there were over 150 families who inhabited the valley. About this time 25 families journeyed to Jerome [Junction], Arizona, by horse and wagon to experiment with communal living, they established themselves in large barns and acquired menial jobs connected with [their own farm or other] ranch or factory work. The colony soon disbanded because of quarrels and disagreements among the members. The experimentalist scattered to other Prygun Molokan settlements and some returned to Guadalupe."

Both of the above books have mistakes, marked in red, and should not be cited as factual without double-checking. A more complete history is in-progress. In Mexico they were the Tiukma (Тюкма) congregation, from Novo-Mikhailovka village, south of Kars city, Kars Oblast, Russia (now in Turkey). Their village in Kars province changed names several times. The current name is
Dikmekoyu or Dikme (south of Kars city). The suffix "koy" means village in the Turkish language. Immigrating Pryguny pronounced Dikme as Tiukma (soundex similar words)

When the
"Tiukma" colonists got to Arizona in 1916, they were called "Jeromesky" (Dzheromskiy : Джеромский) for the train station and sign they stopped at Jerome Junction, a depot town built by Senator W. A. Clark in Chino Valley, who earlier invited Dukhoborsty and Svobodniki (1901), and Pryguny (1905-1907) to grow sugar beets on his farm near Anaheim, Orange County, California, and likely played a role in recruiting them to grow food for his mine workers in Jerome. The City of Prescott arranged for them to have a farmers market in the capital.

Most American Prygun and Dukh-i-zhiznik oral history, and Mohoff, mistakenly reported they went to the mountain-side mining town of Jerome, Arizona, which is 18 miles west of Jerome Junction. Visitors to this colony in the Chino Valley were given directions get off the train at the sign "Jerome ....," hence the nickname and misunderstanding about its location in oral history.

For much more, see "Dzheromskiy Colony Arizona 1916".

APPENDIX I  (Added)
All names on map (insert) in alphabetical order,
with house numbers for Guadalupe Valley.

Link to map in Mohoff 1993.  Shows names in alphabetical order by district.

Some heads of household who moved are shown more than once, at several houses on this list. Some people have the same names. Some names are misspelled. Identities will become clear when dates of birth and death, and spouses can be added.

Mohoff apparently confused or combined everything south of Ensenada as one area he called "Punta Banda" on the map. Names shown in colony "Punta Banda?" on map in Mohoff 1993 were south of Ensenada at either La Mesa de San Carlos, Naranjo, or Manadero; not in Punta Banda, because Punta Banda is further south of these 3 areas. Compare to his description of leased areas on page 18 in which he separated the 4 areas but did not say who lived where.

Missed in the book: In the 1950s the
Ridivon Stepanich Pabloff family in Ensenada bought most of the Punta Banda area (~600 acres). Because Pabloffs had so much land, corrupt government officials confiscated most of his property, but the family managed  to hold on to about 1/3. Today the family owns and maintains the La Jolla Beach Camp, with adjacent residential property (La Jolla Camp), a commuity hall, the La Jolla Camp Motel and volunteer Punta Banda Fire Station.

APPENDIX J  (Added 2021)
1938 — 15 Households migrate to Ramona,
North San Diego County, California

In 1938 about 11-15 families moved to the United States under the Turkish immigration quota. Though they emigrated from Kars Oblast, Russia, before October 1921, their home villages were now in Kars Province, Turkey and they were considered Turkish citizens. They arranged loans from Security-First National Bank, Los Angeles, to buy a over 200 acres for $50 an acre, in 40-acre parcels, with a $200 down-payment. Their land is in the Etcheverry tract, south of the Romona ariport along Santa Maria Creek and on Vorhees Lane. In 1941 most of these land owners were listed in the newspaper with thousands of other people for delinquient school district taxes. Names here are spelled as published, with parcel number, property description, and acreage. They appear to have redistributed some of their property.
