 We have lived in cities for decades and are receding further and further from nature. We are less aware of our little brothers [animals], learning a little about them from books and the [TV program] "Travelers' Club". But our interest in the animal world is not quenched. What is surprising is they, like us, are a part of the same natural world. The animals themselves should be treated with respect, and they can not stand it when the two-legged [animals] take liberty with them. ...
У меня, когда я отлавливал гюрз в Азербайджане, тоже произошла встреча с медведем, к счастью не такая «теплая», совершенно бескровная и более комичная. В горах Азербайджана затерялось молоканское селение Алтыагач. В этих глухих местах я останавливался, чтобы отловить змей для Бакинского серпентария. When I was catching vipers [snakes] in Azerbaijan, I also encountered a bear. Fortunately it was a "close encounter" [warm], it was bloodless and more funny. There is a Molokan village named Altyagach hidden in the mountains of Azerbaijan. Went to this remote place to catch snakes for the Baku Serpentarium.
Ночевал у Семена, человека лет под пятьдесят, жившего охотой. Кто медвежатником его называл, а кто и волкодавом. Семен-молокан, отбившись от цивилизации, человеком был странным. Когда я сказал, что у меня болит зуб, он очень удивился и все спрашивал: «А какая она, зубная боль?»
I spent the night with Semion, a man of about 50 years old, who lived by hunting. Some called him a bear hunter, others called him wolf hunter. Semion the Molokan isolated himself from civilization. He was a strange man. When I said that I have a toothache, he was very surprised and kept asking: "How does it feel to have a toothache?"
Меня за русского Семен не принимал, говорил, дескать, какие вы русские? Это мы, молокане, русские. Ну да ладно. Вот с Семеном мы и стали гюрз ловить, и от него я все тропинки звериные узнал. Каких только животных не видели мы с ним: и лис с лисятами, и барсуков, и кабанов, и даже рысь. А вот медведя не увидел бы, да помог случай. Semion did not consider me to be Russian, saying what kind of Russian are you? We Molokans are Russians. Well, that's all right. So Semion and I started to catch vipers.I learned all the paths of wild animals from him. We saw all kinds of animals: foxes with puppies, badgers, wild boar, and even lynx. If it was not for an accident, I would not see a bear.
Приехали в деревню военные во главе с полковником. И – к Семену: «Выгони нам медведя!» А Семен сомневается: «Вы когда-нибудь медведя видели? Это может плохо кончиться». У самого Семена родной брат погиб под медведем, ему не до игр.

«Да ты что, – смеются военные. – Ты посмотри, какие у нас карабины...» Решето, видите ли, они решили из медведя сделать.
Led by a colonel, a military group arrived at the village. And asked Semion: "Get us a bear!" But Semion doubted: "Have you ever seen a bear? This could end badly." Semion's own brother was killed by a bear, he did not want to play games.

"What's wrong with you, they laughed, can't you see our rifles ... " They wanted to make a sieve  out of a bear.
«Ладно, – говорит Семен, – выгоню вам медведя». Я стал проситься с ним, но он меня не взял, дескать, медведь тебе не гюрза... Да и с военными должен же кто-то остаться.
"Well then", said Semion, "I'll get you a bear". I begged him to take me with him. But he did not take me, saying that a bear is not a viper ... And someone has to stay with the military group.
«Ты за полковником присматривай», – то ли в шутку, то ли всерьез сказал Семен. И посадил меня вместе с охотниками на полянке в лесу, где камнями была выложена специальная засада. "You keep an eye on the Colonel", said Semion, whether in jest, or seriously. And he put me together with the hunters in a clearing in the woods, where the stones were specially lined up for an ambush [to catch a bear].
Ну, все улеглись за этими камнями, приготовили карабины, ждут. Я, кроме фотоохоты, никакой другой не признаю, сижу себе в стороне, смотрю, чем дело кончится.
Well, everyone prepared their rifles, hid and waited behind those stones.  I personally only do photo-hunting [take pictures of animals]. I don't do any other type hunting. So I was sitting on the side and thinking how it will all end up.
Лежали, лежали наши охотники и соскучились. Решили перекусить. Тут же появились коньячок, водочка, закусочка. Все уселись в кружок на ровном месте. Один стакан, второй... Весело стало. Истории всякие рассказывают, оружие в сторонке лежит. И тут-то медведь и выходит, да не с той стороны, откуда мы ждали, а прямо на нас, с тыла. Карабины – на камнях, а медведь рядом. Я оторопел и только краем глаза вижу, как все охотники врассыпную брызнули – кто куда. Our hunters got bored laying and laying. They decided to snack. Immediately they got out cognac, vodka, and snack food. All sat in a circle in an open area. One drink, then a second ... and they were very happy. They told various stories, and put their weapons to one side. And just then a bear appears, but not from side where we waited, but from the other side, coming straight at us from behind. The rifles were on the stones, and the bear was close. I was dumbfounded, and just in the corner of my eye I saw how all the hunters scattered in all directions.
Мне сказано было смотреть за полковником, так я вроде как по приказу за ним и побежал. Что интересно, я молодой тогда был, а полковника так и не смог догнать, чтоб охрану обеспечить. Но я здорово выиграл, что за ним побежал. Вы пробовали бежать в чаще леса? Нет? И не пробуйте...

В общем, Семен со своими односельчанами полдня медведя выгоняли, а потом полдня нас по лесу собирали.
I was told to look after the colonel, so I kind of took it like an order and ran behind him. Interestingly, I was young then, but could not keep up with the colonel and was not able to ensure his protection. But I was lucky to have been running behind him. Have you tried running in woods? No? And do not try it ...

In short, Semion, with his fellow villagers, chased this bear for half a day, and for the second half they gathered us in the woods.

This is the second of three anecdotes about animals. The first is about a drunk who decided to shake hands with a polar bear at the zoo, and was found by the zoo keepers after a bear severely injured him. In the third story, a pilot who has no luck ridding himself of a pet cat in his home town, decides to fly the cat to another city while working. His co-pilot plays a trick by capturing the dumped cat, and returning it to the pilot's house before the pilot gets home.
